Care Philosophy: My approach to patient care is to listen to the patient intently and to commit my full attention to the patient's concerns. Very often the diagnosis becomes clear just from patient input and information. My main areas of interests include hepatitis and biliary problems. Inflammatory bowl disease is growing concern in Brooklyn, and HIV afflictions in our community and its impact on the bowel is a challenge to our speciality.

Biography: Dr. Silvera obtained his B.A. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1977.   He received his medical degree in 1982 from Meharry College in Nashville, Tennessee where he graduated with honors.  He received the Human Physiology Award and was awarded membership in the AOA Honor Medical Society. Dr. Silvera completed his Residency in Internal Medicine as well as a Fellowship in Gastroenterology at Beth Israel Medical Center.A Brooklyn native, Dr. Silvera currently resides there with his wife and family.  He practices both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at Horizon Medical Group.

Care Philosophy: Dr. Crawford received his undergraduate degree in 1996 from Georgetown University. He received his MD in 2001 from Yale University School of Medicine and completed a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Research Fellowship in Genetics and Molecular Biology in 1999. He subsequently completed internship and residency training in Internal Medicine in 2004 at the New York Presbyterian Hospital Â? Weill Cornell Campus. He spent the following year studying the effects of dietary components in cancer prevention under support from the NIH. He has completed his fellowship in GI in 2008 at Weill Cornell Campus.

Biography: Ravi Sharaf, MD, MS is a gastroenterologist and health services researcher with a clinical focus on the care of patients with hereditary cancer syndromes.He is the Director of Clinical Cancer Genetics at Weill Cornell Medicine and an Associate Professor of Medicine, with appointments in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Department of Medicine, as well the Department of Population Health Sciences. His research focuses on optimizing the delivery of genomic medicine, studying the comparative and cost effectiveness of alternate cancer prevention strategies, and tailoring cancer prevention to individual risk. His research is funded by the National Cancer Institute and the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute.He completed his internal medicine training at Columbia University Medical Center-New York Presbyterian Hospital. At Stanford University Hospital and Clinics, Dr. Sharaf completed his fellowships in gastroenterology and clinical cancer genetics, and obtained a Masters of Science degree in Epidemiology.

Biography: Jeffrey Milsom, MD, FACS, has unique expertise and unparalleled experience in minimally invasive surgery for complex colorectal diseases. Dr. Milsom is the lead inventor of the endoluminal surgical platform, commercially known as the DiLumen, which stabilizes the colon to allow for endoscopic procedures of greater complexity, thereby avoiding surgery for some patients. He has performed close to 2,000 laparoscopic colon and rectal operations, and has been invited to perform surgeries in over 15 countries. Under Dr. Milsom's leadership, 90 percent of all procedures in the Colon and Rectal Section at New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center are now performed using high-tech, minimally invasive technologies. He has published four books, 24 book chapters and over 250 papers, presentations and educational videos.He is a member of 14 prestigious professional societies, and is a Fellow at the American Society of Colon & Rectal Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons and the Society of Surgical Oncology.After graduating summa cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Milsom received his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1979. He fulfilled two years of residency at Roosevelt Hospital in New York and completed his residency at the University of Virginia Medical Center, where he served as Chief Resident. He concluded his advanced training as a Fellow in Colon and Rectal Surgery at the Ferguson Clinic, Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1985, and has been a board certified colon and rectal surgeon since 1986. He joined the faculty of New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center in 2001.Dr. Milsom was Assistant Professor of Surgery at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan from 1986 through 1989. During this period he was also the Director, Department of Surgical Research at the Ferguson Clinic. From 1990 to 1998, he was the Director of Research, Department of Colorectal Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and from 1997 through 1998 he was also the Director of Research, Minimally Invasive Surgery Center at the Cleveland Clinic. In April 1998, Dr. Milsom became a Professor of Surgery at The Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, Chief of the Division of Colorectal Surgery and Co-Director of Minimally Invasive Surgery.Reflecting his strong interest and expertise, Dr. Milsom currently serves as an active member of the hospital's Operating Room New Technology Committee and the Minimal Access Surgical Committee. Care Philosophy: Dr Ype de Jong is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Sanford I. Weill Medical College of Cornell University and an Attending Physician, New York-Presbyterian Hospital Cornell campus. He joined the faculty after completing his Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology training at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York. In his patient practice Dr. de Jong's interests include viral hepatitis, Primary Biliary Cirrhosis, and Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease as well as liver disease associated with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. In addition he is trained in general Gastroenterology, including endoscopy and colon cancer screening. His research interests are geared to better understanding how hepatitis viruses can evade the immune system and are able to chronically persist in a subset of those infected. To this end he is working on developing new models for hepatitis C virus infection in the basic science arm of the Center for the Study of Hepatitis C at The Rockefeller University.
